| Subject Content: | P. Psomopoulos begins by introducing the daily schedule.
C. A. Doxiadis follows with his talk. He stresses the increased participation of younger people in this Symposium and presents the Symposiums main topic, "Man and his settlements". He makes special reference to child development within urban environment and to the relationship between the size of the place of residence and the toys a child plays with (doll houses). He also speaks of city planning, and specifically, of the need to take into account peoples special needs and refers to the connections between ekistic problems in a city (e.g. public transport issues) and the citys specific social disorders. The talk is interrupted by a short discussion between S. Keller and an observer who argue about the non-logical powers of man and his unpredictable -and thus uncontrollable- reactions. C. A. concludes the meeting with a reference to "Megalopolis". R. Lourie begins by describing the possibilities of preventing behavioral dysfunctions during the first stages of brain development. Later, W. Nielsen and C. Chagas speak about the long-term goals set by developing countries and their specifications. M. Meyerson and C. A. Doxiadis speak about citizens participation in decision-making; C. A. Doxiadis specifically refers to social disorders caused by exclusion from this process. J. Tyrwhitt reads the 1968 report of the International Seminar on Ekistics (ISE). A. Toynbee, M. Mead and K. Deutsch speak about technological advances, advantages and the need to clarify this process. S. Verney and L. Duhl conclude this meeting by referring to citizens participation and the need for people to re-define their priorities in their seeking to satisfy their needs. |
